| Preventing Sports Injuries and Illness
This information has been provided by Sports Medicine Australia. SMA is Australia's peak advisory body on all medical and health issues for active people.
With the Pan Pacific Masters Games about to start hopefully you have followed our earlier advice and are now in the peak of health, thanks to your months of preparation and training! But even so, there is always a chance of sports related injuries or illnesses occurring and we want you to do all you can to avoid this happening so that you can get the most out of your Games.
We know from the scientific research into sports injury prevention that the biggest risk for sustaining a sports injury is having had an injury previously, particularly if that injury has not completely resolved. So if this sounds like you, you should see a doctor with expertise in sports medicine such as Sports Physician or a member of Sports Doctors Australia, or for musculoskeletal injuries you can see a Sports Physiotherapist.
As well, SMA recommends that you follow the Smartplay guidelines of:
- Warm Up
- Drink Up
- Gear Up
- Fix Up
This is because:
- Proper warm up helps to minimize the risk of muscle tears and strains by improving blood circulation, and also prepares both your body and brain for exercise.
- A lack of adequate fluids can negatively affect sports performance and therefore increase the risk of injury. Heat related illness like heat stroke is also more likely.
- Properly fitting, appropriate protective equipment in good condition such as eye protection, mouth guards, helmets and gloves can reduce the risk of injury. Also, taping and bracing for existing injuries can reduce the chance of re-injury. Correct shoes for each sport should also be considered to be proper protective equipment. Lastly don’t forget your sunscreen and a hat.
- If an injury does occur the RICER regime should be followed - Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation, followed by a Referral to a qualified health professional such as a doctor or physiotherapist for an expert diagnosis and treatment plan.
Sports Medicine Trainer's role:
The Sports Trainer’s prime responsibility is to make sport safer. This is achieved by:
- Implementing appropriate injury prevention
- Preparing players for competition
- Providing the appropriate immediate management of injuries
- Providing immediate crisis management of severe injuries
- Informed referral of injuries to a more qualified health professional for further advice and management
Ice Information:
Ice will be provided as part of the treatment during the Pan Pacific Masters Games. Recovery ice treatments are to be provided by teams whether that be the team organiser or team manager.
Strapping information:
Preventative strapping will be charged at $5. Competitors that provide their own tape can access free strapping. Strapping for an injury that occurs during the Games competition is free.

| Lisa Mumberson - From waiting hours to weighting hours
Normally, children will learn sports from their parents, but for athletics participant from Bradbury in NSW, Lisa Mumberson, she literally picked up weight throwing from her daughter Ashleigh and her long training hours.
Now with Ashleigh, 18, off to India to compete in the Commonwealth Youth Games from the 12 to 18 October, it seems only fair for Lisa to head northbound in November to attend her second Pan Pacific Masters Games.
Lisa took up the sport three years ago when bored with daughter Ashleigh’s long training sessions, three hours a day, four days a week.
“I spent a lot of time sitting in the car, and then I got out, and said I wanted to give it a go,” said Lisa.
“Ashleigh didn’t want me to – she didn’t want me to embarrass her. And her coach was a bit reluctant to take me on, but I said that if I could have a go I would give it 100 percent, and I did.”
Previously a Junior National Speed Skating Champion, Lisa now enjoys her participation in a majority of throw events, competing locally in weekly Bradbury competitions and those held at Homebush Bay.
“I love the challenge - it is such a technical sport. But it’s great.
“The social side of athletics is also excellent. It is all about meeting great new people constantly, through some great competition.”
Travelling Ashleigh’s champion route, the mother and daughter duo are generally able to compete in the same championship events such as the NSW State and National Athletics Championships, with Lisa competing in the Masters and Vets categories.
Although coming back from a 10-month training break, Lisa is anticipating the upcoming Pan Pacs as a great holiday, travelling up with a girlfriend who is competing in the walking events.
“We will get the whole week up on the Gold Coast, a holiday away from the kids!
“She is a walker, but I’ve conned her into throwing as well. But now she’s trying to get me into walking,” said Lisa.
With Lisa’s younger daughter also competing recently in national championships for hammer throw, her youngest son a walking competitor, and Ashleigh departing on Friday, Lisa’s training time has been limited.
So any helpful hints from the Commonwealth Youth Games participant?
“Oh no – she definitely keeps away from me when training! No handy hints there!”
With the 2008 Games program already featuring some great competitive track and field events, catch all the action at the Griffith University Athletics track, when the starting gun goes off on Saturday 1 November, running through until Tuesday 4 November.
