Play it, live it, love it!2 December 2008

Thank you to all the competitors, supporters, volunteers and sponsors of the 6th biennial Pan Pacific Masters Games which were held on the Gold Coast last month. It was a magnificent event with great times had by all playing sport, living the Games and loving the entertainment. 2010 is only two short years away so mark down November 2010 in your long-term planner for another fun-filled sporting holiday to the Gold Coast.

The Pan Pacs in a nutshell …

It was nine action-packed days of sport and eight rocking nights of entertainment. That was the Pan Pacific Masters Games of 2008, with 9,300 competitors playing it, living it and loving it!

The Pan Pacs culminated with a huge night of celebration at a packed Games Village to close the event on the final Saturday with ‘Mental as Anything’ taking centre stage.

There were laughs, hugs, kisses, tears and beers. Stories were told, medals were shown, photos were taken and friends were made at the biggest Pan Pacs night ever!

The total number of participants this year was a slight increase from 2006 which has delighted organisers.

There were competitors from 16 countries and every Australian state and territory including remote locations like Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsular in the Northern Territory.

There were great acts of sportsmanship like in the 10,000m at the Athletics where Andrew Clowes sacrificed his own performance to guide blind runner Damien Williams to the finish after Damien’s guide had to pull out mid-race.

Sponsors had a great time with the Commonwealth Bank’s Matt Taffe entering a touch team, and James Frizelle’s Gold Coast Mazda displaying a signed-up Mazda 2 at the Lawn Bowls competition. Official radio station 102.9FM Hot Tomato broadcast live from Basketball, Indoor Rowing, Swimming and Beach Volleyball through the week.

The Games Village was pumping over the eight nights with thousands of participants enjoying the entertainment and hospitality. Daryl Braithwaite performed many of his hits on the Wednesday night, enthralling the huge crowd which was a sea of red for the Heart Foundation’s ‘Go Red’ Wednesday. Olympic Hockeyroo Nikki Hudson joined a panel of comedians for Thursday night’s CareFlight Comedy Debate that ‘The Pan Pacs are better than the Olympics’. Of course, the Pan Pacs won the debate!

A host of other personalities were seen among the competitors or guests at the sports including Queensland rugby league origin great Kevin Campion; former Wallabies Andrew Walker, Elton Flatley and Garrick Morgan; Australian squash legend Brett Martin; former and current basketball stars Andre Moore, Pero Cameron, Ben Melmeth and Dave Claxton; and former Australian Test cricketer Richie Robinson.

The volunteers had a blast and did everything with a smile on their face proudly adorned in their blue ‘Event Crew’ shirts.

Pan Pacific Masters Games General Manager Cameron Hart said it was the best Pan Pacs yet.

“Everyone had a great time from the competitors to the officials, volunteers, staff and sponsors. I look forward to seeing everyone back in 2010.”
